Under Pressure is a show of recent work and a night of action printmaking with Nancy Woods. A reformed painter, Woods’ recent print projects have been driven by impact. Bitch, Bitch, Bitch, Bitch, Bitch is a record of Woods’ work with a wall she constructed in her studio to try something new in relief printing, to put back what her work had taken away. Carving the wall, sometimes attacking it, she takes a relief print of the surface before returning to patch the wall and record the result. The resulting prints are a give and take between repair and destruction, Woods by turns playing the roles of ardent vandal and frustrated janitor.
Woods’ Dance Prints take the principle of impact down to the floor. Transforming the Concrete Utopia gallery space into a printable dance floor for one night, attendees are immersed in participatory printmaking fueled by good music and spirit. The resulting prints are displayed as they are produced, growing the show as the night goes on.
